Senior Thesis - Bakunawa

Bakunawa was created as my MassArt thesis capstone. It will be premiered at Boston Asian Amerian Film Festival and FilAm Creative Festival in the fall of 2025.This film was created as a dedication to my late Lola, Milagros. As a young child, my mother reminisced her many memories of her and my Lola. As I unfortunately never met her, all I had to work from was the nostalgic retellings from my mother. This film was a culmination of all the magical feelings I felt as I learned more and more about my Lola.

Bakunawa went through an awkward puberty as many films do- my process involved a lot of introspection. As the child of an immigrant mother- I was disconnected from my culture early on in order to assimilate. This film was created alongside my research and my pursuit of reclaiming my birth-culture. Through the teachings and literature of "Sikodiwa", "Albert Samaha", and "Hayao Miyazaki", I began my writing and production process.Early on, I realized I wanted to create a film with no dialogue- a film that worked solely off of environmental storytelling and negative space-moments. Although I have experience in the teachings of a Westernized institution, I wanted to break away by creating something with the intent of Eastern directing.
